Become a Competent Health & Safety Representative in Your Workplace
The Essential OHS Representative skills programme (SP-250815) equips employees in low-risk work areas with the knowledge and competencies required to fulfil the role of Health and Safety Representative as defined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (Sections 17–18). This SAQA-aligned programme ensures that representatives understand their statutory obligations and can actively contribute to a safer workplace.
Even in low-risk environments such as offices, retail spaces and warehouses, workplace hazards – from ergonomic injuries and slips to electrical risks and medical emergencies – can result in serious harm if left unmanaged. This programme empowers elected representatives to identify, report and help resolve these hazards before they escalate.
Aligned with Unit Standard 259622, the programme develops competence in understanding workplace health and safety legislation, performing representation activities, and participating in organisational safety structures. Learners will be equipped to conduct inspections, accompany Department of Employment and Labour inspectors, investigate incidents, and make recommendations to improve workplace safety.
